Artist Statement
Even though I have always lived in the city, as a teenager, all my summers were spent in the Mont-Laurier region, where the forest is dense and wild. Later on in my life, I discovered outdoor sports, my favourites being mountain hiking and snowshoeing. After spending so much time in the forest, it’s only natural that the forest theme would appear in my art.

Abstraction and Realism
I use the theme of the forest and the trees as a starting point to explore the frontier between figurative and abstract work, where the references to what surrounds us gets blurred. This is where we can enter an invented universe. Some paintings are more abstract than others, the reference to trees only being lightly suggested.

This series of painting is about the sensation of being in the forest, rather than being a distant observer, admiring the scenery from a distance. This sensation is recreated with the use of light gently penetrating the forest through the leaves and creating interesting shapes and patterns of light and shade.
The leaves dance in response to the breeze, creating hazy images and color spots. Come the end of the day, the last rays of sunshine light a few tree trunks, here and there, the most peaceful time of day. Back in The Laurentians
These paintings were inspired by the Jardins du precambriens located in Val-David, Quebec. This site hosts an outdoor biennale of insitu installations, right in the forest! Quebec artist Rene Derouin is the creator and very generous host of this one of kind art installation. The painting entitled The Pond was inspired in the gardens of the Maison Lacombe situated in Joliette Quebec.

Inspirations
Growing up in Ottawa, Ontario, the very first museum I ever visited is the National Gallery of Canada who houses a superb collection of paintings but also plein air paintings by the Group of Seven. These were created on sight, in the wilderness, capturing the wild movement of the trees and clouds lifted by gusts of wind. Their graphic interpretations of the elements of nature is inspiring, especially those of Lawren Harris. The colors are bright and saturated and the landscapes very animated!
Technique
My main palette is that of the forest at the end of the day, when the shadows become tinted with purple. I also use the bright colors of the fall foliage and the deeper shades of the dark forest.
These paintings were created using many layers of transparent acrylic paint with the addition of glazing medium. This technique creates bright colors that are mixed on the canvas as much as on the palette. There is no water in my application of the acrylic paint, leaving colors at their brightest. |
