Abstract Tree Leaves - Mixed Media Nature Art
Artist Statement
Mixed Media Art
Attracted by the new mixed media art techniques, I decided in 2012, after painting with oils for over twenty years, to switch to acrylic paints. This was not an overnight change but a gradual one brought on by my work in my art journal where I made extensive use of collage, incorporating a wide variety of elements such as tea leaves, acrylic paint skins, photographs, fabric, wrapping paper, packing bubbles, etc. The simplicity of the tree leaf and tree branch imagery lends itself quite well to elaborate textures achieved by layering and incorporating different materials in the painting. More specifically, the texture material of choice in the abstract tree leaves series is white tissue paper. This paper is used to create ripples in the water or veining in a tree leaf. |
Since this paper is also semi-transparent and lets the underlying color come through, the layering also lifts the image off of the canvas. The addition of glazing medium and subsequent layers of transparent paint also contribute to create depth and movement in the painting.
From Realism to Abstraction In some paintings, the reference to tree leaves is but a starting point and the imagery evolves beyond simple representation and into a semi abstract universe. I am quite fascinated with the exploration of a blurred line between abstraction and realism, giving free reign to imagination and the unveiling of an new reality. |
